This is a traditional Churn Dash block set in Americana colorways. Blocks should measure 9 1/4″ unfinished, and are created with Dark Prints in Dark Red, Dark Blue, Dark Brown, and Black and with light colored (white to tan) small print background fabric with touches of any of the listed colors. Think shirting fabrics!
Single Block Fabric Requirements: 1 fat quarter of a dark print: Red, Blue, Brown, or Black
1 fat quarter of a light print to coordinate (cream to tan)
If using scraps or yardage, you will need a 11″ square of each fabric
plus two 2 1/4″ squares of each fabric
Directions: Using 1 light and 1 dark fabric, make 4 half square triangles and trim each one to 4″ square. Use your favorite method, OR Cut 1 5″ square of each fabric, mark a diagonal line on the wrong side of the light fabric. Place right sides together, and sew 1/4″ on each side of the marked line. Cut in half on the line, open and press the seam allowance to the dark fabric. This makes 2 HST units. You will need 4 units for your block, so repeat.
Cut strips of your light and dark fabrics that measure 2 1/4″ wide and at least 9 1/2″ long. Sew the two strips together along the long edge. Open and press to the dark fabric. Cut the strip set into four 2 1/4″ wide sections.
Cut one 2 1/4″ square of the light fabric.
Sew 2 of the dark/light strip sets to a light square to make the center row of the block. It will alternate: light-dark-light-dark-light when completed.
Assemble the remaining pieces of the block.
Top section: Join one HST unit with the light fabric to the upper corner, joined to one 2 1/4″ section of the strip set with light fabric toward top. Then join a second HST aligned so the light triangle is to the other upper corner.
Bottom section: Join one HST unit with the light fabric to the lower, outer corner, joined to one 2 1/4″ section of the strip set with light fabric toward bottom. Then join a second HST unit so that the light triangle is to the bottom outer corner.
Corners of completed block should all be light fabric, with the darker color creating the churn dash shape around a center light fabric square.
