Moonlight Quilters
Community Service 2009

Committee Chair: Joanie B. Community Service in 2009

This year our guild will create quilt that will benefit F.A.C.E.S (Families for Autistic Children's Education and Support) of Whatcom County.  FACES main focus is an eight week camp during the summer for Autistic Children with one-on-one care and guidance.  The camp helps the children continue to practice and strengthen academic and social skills learned during a normal school year.  This camp is very important to the children as they do not adapt to having a summer break like a typical child would, they need the structure and consistency of year round schooling.

Community Service Projects from previous years:

There is much we don’t know about autism. We are excited about helping this organization.  And more important, they are excited that we are making this quilt for them to auction.  When Tracey phoned Cathy, their chair person to ask questions and ask if they would be interested in a raffle quilt, she was elated.  She had just been told by the Bellingham School district that the children could no longer meet in the classroom they had been using, and she was in desperate need of some good news.

We are making a beautiful barn raising log cabin quilt, in black and whites with a red center.

We spent our March meeting sewing blocks together. And on April 1, we will be putting the blocks together.

And here is the wonderful quilt shared at the April Guild Meeting.

Each year Moonlight Quilters gives back to the community through their love of quilting.

  • In 2008 many "string" quilts were made for children in crisis through the Brigid Collins Family Support Center. We also made origami crane blocks for a wonderful quilt to be raffled in 2009 as a benefit for the CAST Feeding Program.
  • In 2007 a wonderful quilt was made for the benefit of Blue Skies for Children, a local oraganization helping school-age children.
  • In 2006 a queen sized quilt was made for SISU.
  • In 2005 six bed sized log cabin quilts were donated to the Red Cross emergency relief. Several table runners were donated to SISU for their fundraising auction and 5 lap quilts were completed for Bonnie's Team to be given to patients at the infusion center.
  • In 2004 a beautiful Boston Commons quilt was donated to Faith Lutheran Church, where we hold our monthly meetings. Lap quilts were constructed using kits of donated fabric.
  • In 2003 quilts were donated to many local agencies and organizations
  • In 2002 members displayed quilts in the Infusion Center at St. Joseph's Hospital to cheer patients and staff. This rotating quilt display was enjoyed by all.
  • Guild members continue to donate time, fabric and orphan blocks which are stitched into lap sized quilts. These quilts are donated in the guild's name to Bonnie's Team in memory of Bonnie De Spain, a local quilter who was lost to breast cancer in 2000. The finished quilts are given to cancer patients being treated through the Infusion Center.
