 My Favorite Book

Chairperson: Drew B.

The theme for the 2005 MQ Challenge was "My Favorite Book."

Donna C's winning quilt portrays Frank Baum's Wizard of Oz. Characters are attached with velcro so that they may be moved to different locations as the reader follows the story or enjoys a favorite scene. Donna was challenged by the creation of a background that was pieced in blocks, but which maintained the feeling of a background. For this she chose the log cabin block in colors that represented different parts of Oz.

Chris L. depicts characters and the setting for a series of children's books starting with Swallows and Amazons by Arthur Ransome. Her children all enjoyed reading the books and gave mom suggestions for details for this quilt. Chris was awarded the second place prize.

Laura B. was inspired by The Bone People, a Maori story of characters wanting to belong. The hands represent characters from the book reaching for the heart, or connectedness. Her main challenge was to represent the book without depicting a particular scene. Laura received the third place award.

Fourth place was won by Drew B. who chose a favorite cook book, Vegetable Heaven by Molly Katzen, for her quilt. Drew loves vegetables and reaches for this cookbook often. She was challenged by the diagonal setting for her placemat as well as selecting colors that are a triadic color scheme.
