Community Service in 2007

Moonlight Quilters was the place to be in March as members worked in teams to create different parts of the House For Sale blocks selected by this year's committee for a quilt to be given to Blue Skies for Children in Bellingham, WA.

Committee Chair, Laura B. introduced us to Kristin Hauser. Kristin explained what Blue Skies for Children is about and how our gift will help foster children and those from low income families in our community.

From Laura B.: We began our wonderful Freddie Moran pattern "House for Sale" at the March meeting and completed 63 houses!!  The committee has had two productive meetings since, sewing stars and sashing and additional houses.  The quilt is looking wonderful (we are all planning to buy raffle tickets!) and is in Donna's capable hands for the final assembling work.

We discovered that Judy loves to organize and play with scraps, Tracey has a head for detail and makes a mean Ceasar salad (!!) and Donna kept me on track while I ran around re-assigning jobs to all of you.  It has really been fun!  The quilt will benefit Blue Skies for Children and will be displayed at various locales throughout the summer and early fall.  Raffle tickets will be available at all locations, so watch this site to find where you can send your friends and their wallets!!

Additionally, Judy took on the task of making up kits from the vast array of community service fabric.  50+ kits were taken at the March meeting and about 12 remain, should you want to make a lap quilt for Blue Skies, the transfusion center, Project Linus or any worthy cause of your choosing.

Yay, Judy!  Yay, Moonlight Quilters for giving from the hearts and hands!

Community Service Projects from previous years:

Pick up one of "Judy's" fabric packets at the next guild meeting and create a lap quilt of your own design. Completed quilts should be donated to an agency within our community. So many quilts and so many ways to make a difference!

Each year Moonlight Quilters gives back to the community through their love of quilting.

  • In 2005 six bed sized log cabin quilts were donated to the Red Cross emergency relief. Several table runners were donated to SISU for their fundraising auction and 5 lap quilts were completed for Bonnie's Team to be given to patients at the infusion center.
  • In 2004 a beautiful Boston Commons quilt was donated to Faith Lutheran Church, where we hold our monthly meetings. Lap quilts were constructed using kits of donated fabric.
  • In 2003 quilts were donated to many local agencies and organizations
  • In 2002 members displayed quilts in the Infusion Center at St. Joseph's Hospital to cheer patients and staff. This rotating quilt display was enjoyed by all.
  • Guild members continue to donate time, fabric and orphan blocks which are stitched into lap sized quilts. These quilts are donated in the guild's name to Bonnie's Team in memory of Bonnie De Spain, a local quilter who was lost to breast cancer in 2000. The finished quilts are given to cancer patients being treated through the Infusion Center.
