Guidelines for Friendship Blocks
Please contact Linda S. to sign up to hand out a block
at the next meeting! |
- After completing 12 blocks for others, a guild member may distribute a block pattern. New members are eligible to distribute a pattern after completing 6 blocks for others. Thereafter, a member must complete 12 blocks to be eligible to hand out a block.
- The pattern is the choice of the quilter handing out the block. It is suggested that the block be 12 ½ inches unfinished or the equivalent. However, different sized blocks are acceptable.
- A person handing out a block should prepare a minimum of 25 sets of instructions, along with a sample block. One set of instructions will be kept in the guild Friendship Block book. There is no maximum that can be distributed. You must be present to introduce your block at the guild meeting so you can answer questions as they arise.
- The directions must be in writing. This should include the person’s name, phone number and e-mail address, the month it was handed out, the months it is due back, and any pertinent directions. The more specific the directions, the more likely the block will be completed. Also, it is best that the block not be too complicated. We have members with varying skill levels.
- Members who take a friendship block should finish it in a timely fashion. Remember, a friend is waiting for your block. Blocks are to be completed no later that 3 months after the instructions are distributed. You may turn in a block after four months, but it will not be credited to your total of eligible blocks. If, for some reason, you are unable to complete a block in the time allotted, return it to one of the Friendship Block Committee Chairs, and contact the member for whom you were going to make the block. Members are encouraged to contact the Friendship Block Chair people if they have problems completing a block.
- When turning in a block, be sure to pin or baste a piece of paper on the block indicating who the block was made for, who completed the block, the name of the block, and the date turned in to the Friendship Committee.
- Completed blocks will be collected at the monthly meeting and checked in during the ensuing month. Blocks will then be distributed to their owners at the following month’s meeting. This allows the Friendship Block Chairs to participate in the meetings.
- A member should receive a minimum of 12 blocks per turn. Should less than 12 people sign up when the block is initially presented, it may be distributed again at the next month’s meeting. Should a member complete more than one block for another member, they will receive credit for the first block completed and turned in. Subsequent credit will be given if the member distributing the block fails to receive blocks from at least 12 different members, in which case the member who completed more than one block will receive credit for an additional block completed.
- An update will be printed in the monthly newsletter. This will include whose blocks are due at the next meeting and the name of the block.
- If a guild member who is eligible to hand out a block would like to hand out a block to be completed for the raffle table, please contact a Friendship Block Committee member.
