|
| Do you love a great mystery? Do you love to quilt? Then this is the project for you. This will be a seven month project which, if you keep up every month, will result in a wonderful addition to your home or a great gift. Every month you will receive the next "clue" to solving this mystery. | Contact Sharon T. if you have questions. Check your Newsletter or Roster. | |
| Other needs: large zip closure plastic bags to keep each month's blocks in so things stay organized until assembly begins in October. |
Basic Fabric Requirements: This quilt requires three fabrics - in different values. Don't use too large a print where there are lights and darks in the save fabric. High Contrast!! Fabric recommendations: tone on tone, fossil ferns, or marbled fabrics that read solid.Purchase for following for a twin size quilt:
The block size is 9" finished and there will be 48 blocks in the quilt top when you are done. |
Bring the month's completed "clues" to the next guild meeting and become eligible for a prize drawing! |

Clue #1 - Four Patch Blocks Use your LIGHT and DARK fabrics and make 64 - 3 1/2" four patch units. You will need to cut:
Sew the strips right sides together in one lengthwise seam Press the seam toward the Dark fabric. The units should measure 3 1/2" wide. Next, cut the strips into 2" units. Layer the units with the opposite colors facing and sew them together to create your 3 1/2" four patch units. Put your units into a baggies marked Clue #1. Bring them to the next meeting to be entered into a drawing for a prize. |

| Clue #2 - Nine Patch Blocks You will make 16 3 1/2" Nine Patch blocks using your light and dark fabrics. The blocks are all the same with the dark in the corners and the centers. Cut 1 1/2" strips of your dark and light fabrics. Step 1: Cut two light strips and one dark strip first. Sew a light to a dark and press to the dark. Cut unit to 26" Cut your remaining light strip to 26" and sew to the dark side of the unit. Press to dark. You should have a unit that is 3 1/2" wide and 26" long with the dark strip in the center. Sub cut this into 16 pieces 1 1/2' wide. These pieces become the center column of the 9 patch blocks. Remaining light /dark pieces can be used to make up the segments for the outer columns. Step 2: Cut 3 dark strips 1 1/2" wide and one light strip 1 1/2" wide. Sew a dark strip to each side of the light strip, press to the dark and then subcut into 1 1/2" units. Then take your remaining dark strip and cut a 14" piece off and add it to the remaining light/dark piece left from step 1. Press to the dark and subcut this dark/light dark piece into 1 1/2" segments. Take the rest of this dark strip and cut it in half so you will have approximately two 13" pieces. Sew these on each side of the remaining 14" piece of light fabric from step 1. Press to the dark, and sub cut into 1 1/2" segments. You should have enough of these dark/lightdark units to assemble your 16 Nine Patch Blocks. Put your completed Nine Patch blocks in a baggie and tuck them away until next month. Bring them to the next meeting to be entered into a prize drawing. |

| Clue #5 Block #2 This month you will use the little 3" blocks you made the first three months. Using those blocks make 16 of these blocks you see pictured. A Preview of what is to come! You only have one more block to make, though you will make LOTS of them! They are pretty simple, but a bit time consuming. Because I know you are getting excited, I am going to give you the cutting instructions for those blocks. Then next month, I'll tell you how to put the block together, and in November we will have our Grand Reveal! For our final blocks you will need to cut: Light 3 1/2" squares 24 of these Medium 3 1/2" squares 48 of these Dark 3 1/2" squares 48 of these Medium 3 1/2" x 9 1/2" rectangles 24 of them Dark 3 1/2" x 9 1/2" rectangles 24 of these |

Clue #6 Block #3 This is the final block you will make. You are going to need 24 of these blocks. 1. Using the cutting directions given in Clue #5 above, lay out the pieces as shown in the diagram 2. Take the remaining 3 1/2" squares, and add them to the ends of the long pieces so that your final block will look like the second diagram. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the square and place it right sides together onto the long piece of opposite color. Sew on the line and then trim 1/4" from the sewn line. Next month you will get a map along with the cutting information for the borders! |
