Making Half Square Triangle Units

This method was shared with the guild during the Mystery Quilt project in 2003 by Projects V.P Sharon T. Be aware that this method does leave bias edges that could be a problem.

This method yields 4 matching squares. The key to this method is remembering that when you refer to the chart for cutting dimensions, it starts with squares based on the FINISHED size of the square in your block or quilt. FINISHED SIZE!

  • Cut your squares whatever size you need.
  • With the right sides together, sew a 1/4" seam from each edge all the way round the square.
  • Cut them diagonally twice (corner to corner) and press them open.
  • Trim your dog ears and you will have four near perfect half square triangles.

The original directions recommend that you cut bias strips first and then cut your squares from those. I have never done this and have not had any problems with having bias edges. Feel free to try either way. -Sharon T.
