Creating Quilt Labels

A label becomes a very important element in your quilt. It tells the story of the quilt's creation for future generations.

The Five "Ws" of Quilt Labels

Who-Name of the quilter and the recipient if it is to be a gift

What-Name of quilt, block name, pattern, technique used in construction

When-Dates when started, completed, given

Where-Place where it was made

Why-Event, occasion or reason for creating or giving the quilt

Making the Label

Labels may be as simple as a muslin square hand written using a fabric marking pen and slip stitched to the back of the quilt. You may also consider some of the following:

  • Stamp a design onto the fabric. Use archival ink. Look for the words "Acid Free" for any pen or ink used in the process.
  • Use an extra block from the front and write the details with fabric pens
  • Create the text for your label on your computer using the Word Processor or a Publishing program. Print onto fabric that has been treated for this purpose. Either purchase pre treated fabric sheets or treat your own fabric with a commercial product such as HP Bubble Jet Set. Follow package directions to ensure that the ink will be absorbed and set on the fabric.
  • Adhere fabric to freezer paper sheets or contact paper cut to a standard size for your printer. Ink Jet printers work just fine!
  • Purchase a commercial quilt label program and use it to design your label.
  • Cut a shape that fits with the theme of your quilt and write the details on it using fabric pens. Applique by hand or satin stitch to backing fabric before you quilt.
  • Use any method you choose, BUT DO MAKE A LABEL!
