Storing Smaller Quilts:
To store your smaller quilts or quilt tops, purchase foam pipe insulation at a home improvement store such as Home Depot or Lowe's. Cut it to length with a pair of scissors and slip it around the horizontal piece on a clothes hanger, then drape your quilt over it. The pipe insulation comes pre slit, so be sure this side is facing down. It does a great job of keeping the hanger from creasing your quilt.

Then you cover the hung quilt with an old pillowcase. You can can purchase them very cheaply at a thrift store if you don't have any old ones around. Cut a slit or opening in the middle of the short end of the pillowcase for an inch or two. Pull it over your hanger, with the hook coming out of the slit. The pillowcase will keep the dust off your quilt, while still allowing it to breathe.

Pillowcases & shams can also be used for storing folded
quilts in a linen closet.

Storing Larger Quilts:

If you must fold your quilts and store them on a shelf, take care to cover any part of the shelf which would touch the fabric of the quilt. Acid free paper is a good choice. Stains or chemicals in the wood can permanently discolor your quilt.

When folding the quilt, insert some waded up scraps of batting at the inside of the fold so that it does not make a sharp crease.

If you have a spare bedroom that is seldom used, quilts can be stored flat, in layers on the bed.
